2023 is upon us and with the new year comes a slew of movies to get excited for. This year seems a bit different from past years because many of these upcoming movies were slated for a 2022 release before being moved to 2023, making us wait longer and building up or anticipation.
This is a collaborative list, made by 5 members of our crew, made for some fun (sometimes heated) discussion and debate among our group. Ultimately, there were some great looking movies that didn't make the cut, but we are proud of this list. We feel like this list satisfies our group's varied tastes and is a good representation of The Movie Review Crew as a whole.
Honorable Mentions:
Creed III
RELEASE DATE: March 03, 2023
Knock at the Cabin
RELEASE DATE: February 03, 2023
Cocaine Bear
RELEASE DATE: February 24, 2023
10) Argylle
RELEASE DATE: 2023
An action movie starring Henry Cavill as a globe-trotting spy and directed by Matthew Vaugh (Kingsman: The Secret Service)? We’re in! Cavill is supported by a great cast including, Samuel L. Jackson, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Catherine O’Hara, Bryan Cranston, and John Cena. If this even comes close to matching the energy and style of the Kingsman series, it will be an absolute blast!
9) Master Gardener
RELEASE DATE: 2023
Legendary writer/director Paul Schraeder (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) has been on a recent hot streak. He garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for First Reformed (2018). Then he directed an underrated gem in 2021, The Card Counter. We are guessing that streak will continue in 2023 with Master Gardener. How could a thriller starring Joel Edgerton and Sigourney Weaver not be great?
8) Oppenheimer
RELEASE DATE: July 21, 2023
Christopher Nolan can be a bit of a divisive figure, but even the most stauchest haters have to be intrigued by this biography of the developer of the atomic bomb. The trailer features stunning imagery and the cast is absurdly good, featuring Cillian Murphy (his 6th collaboration with Nolan) alongside Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Gary Oldman, Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek, Josh Hartnett, and Casey Affleck. That cast list alone warrants a spot on this list, regardless of what the movie is about.
7) Napoleon
RELEASE DATE: 2023
Joaquin Phoenix stars in this historical action/biography chronicling Napoleon Bonaparte’s rise to Emperor. Four time Academy Award nominated director Ridley Scott knows his way around a historical epic, so we can expect some great action sequences to compliment Phoenix’s performance. Napoleon ought to have something for all audiences.
6) Beau Is Afraid
RELEASE DATE: 2023
Joaquin Phoenix makes our list again, this time in what director Ari Aster describes as a Nightmare Comedy. Aster’s movies aren’t for everyone, but he has an undeniable talent. Very little is known about this other than it will star Joaquin Phoenix and this vague plot description from IMDB.com; A decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time. Not a lot to work with there. That being said, Aster behind the camera and Phoenix in front was intruiging enough for some of us to earn a spot on our list.
5) Havoc
RELEASE DATE: 2023
If you like action, put this on your must-see list. Gareth Evans, director of The Raid and The Raid 2, returns to the action genre and you know he’s going to deliver the goods. The story seems relatively simple; A detective (Tom Hardy) must fight his way through the criminal underground to rescue a politician’s son. Timothy Olyphant and Forest Whitaker round out the cast. Not much else has been revealed, but Evans’ name attached to an action project is enough to garner a spot on this list.
4) Killers of the Flower Moon
RELEASE DATE: 2023
When large oil deposits were discovered under land belonging to members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma, they became targets of greed and conspiracy intended to remove them from that land at any cost. This movie covers those events as well as the newly formed FBI’s investigation into the murders. With all the talent involved, we might as well lock this in as a favorite at next year’s awards season. Martin Scorsese directs and unbelievably great cast including Robert DeNiro, Leonardo DiCaprio, John Lithgow, and Jesse Plemons. That’s a grand total of THIRTY TWO career Academy Award nominations! I didn’t even mention Brendan Fraser, who is probably going to garner his first nomination for his work in The Whale.
3) Dune: Part Two
RELEASE DATE: November 03, 2023
We love our man, Denny V (Denis Villeneuve)! To this point in his career, he has been as close to a can’t miss director as it gets, most recently nailing the so-called unadaptable Dune in 2021. This one should be just as great, as the story and universe is expanded and the stakes are increased. Many of the stellar cast members return from the first movie, and more beloved characters from the novel will be introduced and played by incredible actors. Austin Butler, fresh off of his star-making turn in Elvis will play Fayd-Rautha, legendary Christopher Walken will play the Emperor of the universe, and the always incredible Florence Pugh will play his daughter, Princess Irulan. This will undoubtedly be one of the most epic movies of 2023!
2) John Wick: Chapter 4
RELEASE DATE: March 24, 2023
The John Wick franchise is already one of our favorite action franchises of all time and, in our opinions, already one of the best. Each one has built upon the previous installment with fantastic stunts, interesting characters, and immersive world-building. We’re curious how long the franchise can keep the momentum going before it all starts to feel repetitive, but they’ve avoided that admirably. Director Chad Stahelski, Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Lawrence Fishburn, and Lance Reddick all return, and they’ve added some great actors and some serious action firepower. New members include Donnie Yen, Scott Adkins, Hiroyuki Sanada, Bill Skarsgard, Shamier Anderson, and Marko Zaror. This is about as close to a no-doubt, sure-fire hit as it gets!
1) Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part 1
RELEASE DATE: July 14, 2023
Sure, some people might be feeling franchise fatigue as this will be the 7th entry in the series, but don’t count us among that group. The star power, incredible action and stunt work, and the ever increasing stakes of the missions have us wanting this series to continue forever. Fantastic action director Christopher McQuarrie returns, along with Tom Cruise and much of the cast from previous entries. New cast additions include Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride), Indira Varma (Game of Thrones),Hayley Atwell (Avengers: Endgame), and Shea Whigham (Take Shelter). Not much is known about the plot, but we have faith. This franchise has been going strong for over two decades, so we don’t expect that to change now.
That does it for our list. Send us a message on our home page and let us know what you think. Which movies are you most looking forward to? Which movies did we leave off that deserve a spot on the list? Let us know your thoughts, and don't forget to come back to this list throughout the year to read or listen to our reviews of these movies as they are released.
